Rogue WiFi Hotspot can Crack Windows Phone Saved Wireless Passwords

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 02:27 PM PDT

All smartphone users are by standard warned against connecting their smartphones to unsecured hotspot but now there is an added security risk for those who own Windows Phone 7.8 and 8. Users with these devices need to be extra careful in the face of the threat recently discovered in Microsoft's OS for Smartphones that when they are on a rogue WI-Fi spot, it is possible for hackers to acquire sensitive information like passwords from Windows Phone.

Windows PhoneA security related post issued by Microsoft has confirmed the company has found out a discrepancy in Windows Phone with its PEAP-MS-CHAPv2 protocol. According to the advisory issued:

To exploit this issue, an attacker controlled system could pose as a known WI-Fi access point, causing the targeted device to automatically attempt to authenticate with the access point, and in turn allowing the attacker to intercept the victim’s encrypted domain credentials. An attacker could then exploit cryptographic weaknesses in the PEAP-MS-CHAPv2 protocol to obtain the victim’s domain credentials. Those credentials could then be re-used to authenticate the attacker to network resources, and the attacker could take any action that the user could take on that network resource.

Microsoft has stated the company did not come across any report or instance where this procedure has been used to attack Windows Phone Smartphones yet. Microsoft has decided not to resolve this problem by issuing any patch for the current OS rather it has strongly advised the Windows Phone users to be concerned about their phone security by configuring their devices so that whenever they connect to an unknown WI-Fi hotspot, their device first demands a verification certificate prior to the login. The security advisory issued includes complete detail to aid users in properly configuring their Windows Phone Smartphones.

Bluetooth Radio Fixes Battery Drain Issue for Windows 8.1 on Surface RT

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 02:19 PM PDT

Windows 8.1 Preview version has been out and being tested actively for users as well as developer based issues. Surface RT owners with Windows 8.1 Preview version installed must expect some bugs to show in their operating systems. Microsoft has recently dealt with such an issue that caused a huge battery drain, the way the problem has been resolved is somewhat interesting.

Windows 8.1 on Surface RTRecently, a Surface RT user posted on the official Microsoft Support Forums that he was having a battery drain of 1-3 % each hour when his tablet having Windows 8.1 Preview was under Connected Standby mode. He further explained the issue that the major reason of the battery going low so quickly is affected by Microsoft UART V2 Driver (\_SB.UAR3) while using Powercfg /sleepstudy option on the tablet.

It is in the reply to his post where the interesting part lies. A Microsoft Support person suggested the tablet owner to switch the Bluetooth wireless radio on. This simple step indeed solved the battery issue though apparently this step would lead to the battery being used more.

It is unclear to most of us how this could have been the answer to such a problem but Microsoft explains it all:

Powercfg /sleepstudy reports any issues that are preventing the CPU from entering its lowest power state during Connected Standby (e.g. screen is off). In this case, the state of the specific UART controller is preventing the CPU entering its lowest power state. This UART happens to be connected to the Bluetooth radio on Surface. Unfortunately, the bug that causes this bad state occurs exactly when the Bluetooth radio is turned off in PC Settings.

According to the support member, this is not a new issue rather a previously known one for Surface RT running Windows 8.1 Preview. It is expected to be completely resolved prior to the release to manufacture (RTM) phase due this month.

iOS 7 Beta 5 Released for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 12:13 PM PDT

Following the hacking event, it seemed Apple would be engaged for some time in fixing the security issues when iOS 7 Beta 4, too, got a little delayed than the expected time. But sooner than most would have expected, the company rose back to action with releasing developer software one after the other including iOS 7 Beta 4 coming out on July 29. Roughly just a week has passed and what do we see? iOS 7 Beta 5 already out and available for developers. As expected, there are several issues resolved and more improvement in store with Beta 5 of iOS 7. We have gathered some detailed information on the latest beta version here.

Previous iOS 7 Beta Versions [Direct Links]

Apple's beta versions of software are almost bug free and as close to the final clean version as possible. The case was not the same for iOS 7 beta versions nonetheless, the attention this beta has attracted compensates for more than that. Jony Ive, working with iOS 7 beta, has directed a number of stark changes to a graphical representation in iOS 7 beta that surpasses all its earlier releases. Not all the attention received has been a long appreciative note as some have showcased disdain on plain lines and flat polarizing design but as more beta versions come out, the side in favor of the most modified is designed so far gets heavier.

iOS 7 Beta 5With iOS 7, it is not all about looks as major enhancements have been made for better functionality and issues have been catered to that were present in OS for too long. Many users resorted to a jailbreak mainly due to the absence of general toggles for a number of settings but now that has been taken care of by introducing a Control Center in iOS 7, there is less reason to get SBSettings Cydia tweak.

A reintroduction of folder system expansion previously seen in Ios 4 has added to a more complete iOS 7 experiences. With each beta release, we see a new bundle of features delivered. If betas are this good, we wonder what iOS 7 would be like when it comes out as final and complete version most probably to be released with the next iPhone launch.

Go ahead and download iOS 7 Beta 5 on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch if you register as a developer with Apple.

Pre-order for New Nexus 7 2013 has Started, Get your Tablet in $299

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 12:02 PM PDT

We have been hearing and talking about Google Nexus devices this year as the company had a few important releases up its sleeve. Nexus 7 for the year 2013 is soon to be launched and the device is already attracting pre-launch orders but the option is only available at an Australian computer retailer shop instead of being on the Google Play Store.

Nexus 7Ausdroid reveals the three models for Google's Nexus 7 are all available at PLE Computers and a slight indication tells the tablet is expected to come out towards the later part of this August. However, the exact time of the launch is still unknown.

The prices vary depending upon the network these models sport. The 16 GB Nexus 7 with Wi-Fi will be available for an Australian $299 price tag whereas the one with 32 GB storage will be priced at $339. On the other hand, Nexus 7 LTE models with 32 GB storage available will have a price tag worth $439. If you convert the prices to U.S. Dollars then they are available for $269 (16 GB WI-Fi), $305 (32 GB WI-Fi) and $395 (32 GB LTE).

However, there is neither official comment nor any confirmed leak as to the final prices of the Nexus tablet thus you might want to hold yourself from pre-ordering one before any official price is released. Those who have pre-ordered the Nexus 7 tablets have two options to grab their device on the launch day: either get it yourself without paying any additional amount from any of the three PLE Computer store locations in Australia or get it delivered within the country as an option offered by the store with the additional cost of Australian $14.08.

You may head to the store even if you are looking for an older Nexus 7 version which is still being offered at $269 ($242 U.S. Dollars) and $339 ($305 U.S. Dollars) for WI-Fi and 3G models, respectively.
